Leadership is all about modeling attitude and behavior. Our internal states, our thoughts, and biases, conscious and unconscious, determine how we perceive the world, and how we act in it. To become an agile, impactful leader, start by working from within.

What is an agile leader? After working with hundreds of leaders over the past 25 years, we’ve seen that agile leaders are the ones who are able to respond creatively to challenging situations arising through abrupt changes. They are the ones who see the world is perfect as it is.... and can be improved. Only from a place of agreement with a situation, no matter how difficult, one is able to see all the possibilities and navigate the changes to achieve the desired result. 

Reading the latest leadership development book, or watching a YouTube video, understanding competencies conceptually, or role-playing them in a seminar, only offers a glimpse of what is possible. While it could be inspiring to imagine the possibility of developing trust, agility, resilience, inclusiveness, or empathy, it’s difficult to put the theory into practice. Participants leave leadership seminars with all the knowledge but none of the mind-shift and tools to bring this new knowledge into their lives. It doesn’t expose or change the attitudes and reactive behaviors that are hardwired by habit.

So, what does? An inward focus, self-awareness, guidance, and support while putting it into practice by engaging with real-world challenges. Also, an honest inquiry into our assumptions and what drives our behavior. Why do I keep postponing meetings with certain stakeholders? What stops me from creating more space for my team members to partake in decision making? This exposes the hidden biases, assumptions, and the physical and emotional states that cause reactive behavior. Then, through daily on-the-job practice, leaders are able to develop inner-agility so that they can respond creatively with agility and model this behavior to their teams.
